Joal Hall Broun
My name is Joal H. Broun and I have been a resident of this area for 23 years. I am married to Jonathan E. Broun, an attorney who grew up in Chapel Hill. We have two children who attend Chapel Hill High School. I served on the Carrboro Board of Alderman for twelve years and I currently serve on the School Improvement Team for Chapel Hill High School. For two years, I also served as the parent representative for the junior varsity soccer team.
Although our schools do so many things well, I believe there are serious concerns that must be addressed.
I am running:
To ensure that the Chapel Hill Carrboro School District educates all of its students to his or her fullest potential;
To eliminate the achievement gap;
To make sure that students with learning disabilities receive the proper resources in a timely manner;
To support the District’s current five year strategic plan; and
To develop an effective plan to maintain current and future schools.
My previous experience as Carrboro Alderman and as a member of the School Improvement Team for Chapel Hill High School have given me a holistic view of the District’s needs. Because of my almost thirteen years on the Carrboro Board of Alderman, I know how to effectively use limited resources. I am currently the Lobbying Compliance Director for the Secretary of State where I enforce the State’s lobbying law. I have also worked as a public defender in Orange and Chatham Counties and saw first-hand the harm that happens when our educational system fails our children.
